LOVE COFFEE? HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DRINKING IT AMID SUMMER HEAT

Coffee is life for some Filipinos who still love to drink a cup of hot coffee amid the blazing summer heat.

As seen in a report by JP Soriano's on "24 Oras Weekend," Sunday, despite the hot weather, some construction workers in Quezon City prefer to drink coffee during their break instead of cold beverages.

According to one worker, he feels "better" every time he drinks coffee.

"Presko sa katawan. Parang [matibay] ang katawan ko kahit mag-construction," another worker said.

Is there any scientific basis to this, or is this just the opinion of a few people?

According to a study by the National Institute of Health, drinking coffee can trigger sweating, which helps control the body temperature. It also said that coffee has compounds worth studying further for possible effects on making feel one refreshed despite the hot weather.

However, Dr. John Paul Ner, an emergency medicine specialist from the East Avenue Medical Center, said that coffee can also cause dehydration.

"It has diuretic effect. Puwedeng umihi ka nang umihi, so ibig sabihin mawawala 'yung tubig sa katawan mo so puwede ka ma-dehydrate," he said.

"If mainit ang panahon, you stay hydrated. So you drink any liquid na you think makakatulong ma-hydrate 'yung katawan mo," Ner added.

Former Health secretary Jaime Galvez Tan said mineral water is still the best option to stay hydrated because of its electrolytes. He also advised to avoid sweets.
