A REALLY GREAT AUSTIN TACO TRUCK TEMPORARILY CLOSES BECAUSE OF ‘CONVOLUTED’ CITY PAPERWORK

Taco truck Paprika has closed its original location in the Highland neighborhood and pop-up at nearby bar Long Play Lounge for now as of July 24. The Instagram post announcing the shutter explains that it’s because of lots of back-and-forth with Austin’s Public Health Department “over an administrative issue.” Ideally, owner and chef Margarito Perez wants to reopen the location, but isn’t sure of the timeline.

Hill Country brewery’s taproom reopens as a pop-up

After Texas brewery Family Business Beer Co. closed its Dripping Springs taproom in May, it’s now going to temporarily reopen as a pop-up taproom this summer in Austin proper. It’ll be sharing space with South Austin Beer Garden in far south Austin. Its first event is a pint night on Wednesday, July 31, followed by meet-and-greets with merchandise for sale on Thursday and Friday, August 15 and 16 .

The brewery — co-owned by couple Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles and Dannel Ackles and general manager Gino Graul — had closed its Dripping Springs taproom because it wanted to reopen somewhere in Austin. While Family is still brewing beer, it is looking for a new location for its taproom.

Hill Country distillery restaurant shutter

Dripping Springs distillery Treaty Oak Distilling closed its on-site restaurant Alice’s in June. Its last day of service seems to have been on June 11. The space is being turned into a dedicated events center.

Vegan food truck shutter

Vegan food truck Mission Burger Co. closed its Chestnut neighborhood location at Zeds Ice Cream at the end of June. It has since relocated to its physical location within South Congress’s River City Market.

Tracking Austin food and drink events

Austin taco truck Con Todo owner and chef Joseph Gomez is bringing back his highly popular cookie bakery Galleta in collaboration with also-very-popular bakery service the Interrupted Baker this weekend. Expect baked goods like the dulce de leche Japanese cheesecake, cafe de olla cookie choux, chorizo hand pies, and peaches and cream cookies. While preorders are already sold out, there will be walk-up availability for baked goods, cookies, and coffee, alongside Con Todo’s breakfast tacos It takes place on Saturday, July 27 from noon to 2 p.m. at Con Todo’s location at North Austin brewery Celis.

Crestview wine bar and cafe the Violet Crown is hosting a weekly pasta special run by head chef Amaris Diaz. The Sunday Summer Supper Series will feature a new pasta dish every week, such as basil cavatelli and beef and squash lasagna. It’ll be available for walk-up services on Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m. this season.

Texas winery C.L. Butaud is hosting a wine dinner at Round Rock Irish restaurant and microbrewery Cork & Barrel next week. The four-course wine-paired meal includes dishes like quail and poblano chile hush puppies, lamb sliders, and flourless chocolate tortes. Tickets are $65, seatings begin at 6:30 p.m. with the dinner at 7 p.m.

Chestnut neighborhood wine restaurant Birdie’s is going on its annual summer break soon, but before it does so, it’s hosting its Korean pop-up Jibbob for two weeks. Run by sous chef Heejae Galluccio, the prix fixe menu will include various Korean dishes paired with drinks by the restaurant’s Sophie Stuart (including rice wines). The pop-up runs from Tuesday, July 30 through Saturday, August 3 and then again from Tuesday, August 6 through Saturday, August 10. And then Birdie’s will be going on its summer vacation from Sunday, August 11 through Tuesday, August 27.
