Meg Stalter has no patience for bland food. That is exactly why the comedian has partnered with Knorr this summer to roast the internet’s saddest, most underseasoned chicken dishes, and why one particularly bleak restaurant meal still haunts her.
“I thought it was going to be some kind of mushroom dish, and it was just one huge fried mushroom,” Stalter tells Delish of an expensive entrée she once ordered in New York.
There was no sauce, no seasoning, and nothing accompanying it. Just an enormous fried mushroom sitting on a plate and expecting to be taken seriously as a full meal.
“After the first bite, I was like, ‘Well, I like mushrooms,’ but it kind of started making me sick,” she says. “And it was extremely expensive.”
The meal is especially offensive considering Stalter actually loves a properly prepared fried mushroom. Her go-to fast-food order is Shake Shack’s ’Shroom Burger, which features a fried portobello with cheese and topped with lettuce, tomato, and sauce.
“The fried mushroom is the best part,” she says. “It actually has seasoning, which is huge for me, obviously.” She rounds out the order with cheese fries and a Diet Coke. She also wants it noted that she loves Arby’s.
When she is eating at home, Stalter prefers something filling, nutritious, and flavorful—specifically roasted chicken seasoned with Knorr Chicken Bouillon, served with sautéed vegetables and rice. Bland chicken, she says, would leave her feeling “boring and bored,” which is not exactly ideal fuel before performing on Broadway.
Stalter is bringing that anti-bland agenda to the Knorr Chicken Roast in New York City on August 10. The event will combine a live comedy set with dinner as Stalter roasts the internet’s worst chicken fails. Chef Sohla El-Waylly will also lead a cooking demonstration featuring Knorr Chicken Bouillon and Roasted Chicken Premium Flavor Base.
Guests will be served a menu of Knorr recipes, receive exclusive goodies, and leave with “rescue recipes” for their own kitchen disasters.
A limited batch of free tickets will be released on Eventbrite on August 6 at 5 p.m. ET. Tickets are first come, first served, so unlike that giant unseasoned mushroom, this is one meal you may actually need to fight for.
